What Is an Amenorrhea Evaluation?

Amenorrhea refers to the absence of menstrual periods. It can be primary (never having started menstruation) or secondary (periods that previously occurred but have stopped for 3 months or longer). An evaluation helps identify medical, hormonal, lifestyle, or physical causes contributing to menstrual disruption.

During your Amenorrhea Evaluation, we assess:
  • Menstrual history & symptom timeline
  • Pregnancy risk assessment and testing
  • Hormonal symptoms (fatigue, temperature changes, hair/skin changes)
  • Stress, lifestyle, and exercise habits
  • Medical conditions like PCOS, thyroid issues, or early menopause
  • Medication or contraceptive-related causes
  • Need for diagnostic labs or imaging

Why Early Evaluation for Amenorrhea Matters

With in-home care, patients benefit from privacy and convenience. UrgentCare2Go® helps individuals:

  • Identify hormonal or medical causes of missed periods
  • Determine whether testing such as labs or imaging is needed

  • Receive professional guidance on treatment options
  • Understand when amenorrhea may indicate a more serious condition

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

UrgentCare2Go

What is amenorrhea?

Amenorrhea is the absence of menstrual periods. It can occur due to pregnancy, hormonal imbalance, stress, lifestyle factors, or medical conditions such as PCOS or thyroid disease.

When should I seek medical care for missed periods?

If you have missed three or more consecutive periods, or if you have never started menstruation by age 15, you should schedule an evaluation. Sudden changes in cycle patterns also merit medical review.

Can pregnancy cause amenorrhea?

Yes. Pregnancy is the most common cause of amenorrhea. Your clinician may recommend testing during your visit.

Is amenorrhea serious?

While sometimes caused by lifestyle or hormonal factors, amenorrhea may indicate underlying medical conditions that require evaluation, such as pituitary disorders, thyroid imbalance, or ovarian dysfunction.

Can stress or weight changes affect menstruation?

Yes. Significant stress, rapid weight loss, excessive exercise, or eating disorders can all lead to missed periods.

What tests may be recommended?

Depending on symptoms, your clinician may order lab work such as hormone panels, thyroid testing, pregnancy testing, or metabolic labs. In some cases, pelvic ultrasound may be advised.

Can hormonal birth control cause missed periods?

Yes. Some contraceptives can lighten or stop menstrual cycles. Your provider will review your medication history to determine whether birth control is contributing.

Is in-home evaluation as accurate as clinic evaluation?

Yes. Mobile clinicians perform thorough assessments in the home and can order the same labs or imaging studies that are available from a clinic when medically appropriate.

How long does the evaluation take?

Most amenorrhea assessments take 20–40 minutes, depending on the complexity of symptoms and whether testing is needed.

Does insurance cover this visit?

Yes. Most major insurance plans are accepted. Out-of-pocket or cash-pay options are also available for those without coverage.

What if a more serious condition is suspected?

Your provider will guide you on next steps, which may include specialist referral, imaging, or additional diagnostic testing.

Can teenagers be evaluated?

Yes. Both in-home and in-clinic evaluations are available for teens experiencing delayed or absent menstruation.

Is my information kept private?

Absolutely. All visits follow strict HIPAA privacy standards to protect your personal and medical information.

Do you offer follow-up care?

Yes. Follow-up visits are available to monitor your symptoms, review lab results, and adjust treatment plans as needed.
