What Is a Food Allergy Consultation?

A Food Allergy consultation helps determine whether your symptoms are related to an allergic reaction, food intolerance, cross-contamination exposure, or another condition. Providers evaluate reaction timing, severity, and potential triggers to guide safe and effective care.

What We Review During Your Visit:
  • Reaction history and suspected food triggers
  • Skin symptoms such as hives, itching, or redness
  • Swelling, breathing difficulty, or throat symptoms
  • Digestive symptoms such as nausea or abdominal pain
  • Risk evaluation for severe reactions
  • Recommendations for testing, avoidance, and treatment

Why Early Food Allergy Evaluation Matters

In-home evaluations offer a safe, low-stress environment—especially for patients with anxiety about reactions or travel. UrgentCare2Go® helps patients:

  • Identify whether symptoms are allergy-related
  • Understand risk levels and prevention steps
  • Receive proper evaluation for severe or recurring reactions
  • Develop a personalized care and safety plan
  • Learn which foods or ingredients to avoid

How to Prepare for Your UrgentCare2Go

Create a Clean and Comfortable Environment:

  • Ensure the area for your UrgentCare2Go service is clean and has sufficient space for our equipment and staff to move around comfortably
  • Please ensure you are ready at the scheduled appointment time

Secure All Pets in an Enclosed Area:

  • Of course, we love pets! However, for the safety and comfort of everyone, please ensure all pets are secured in a separate, enclosed space during the visit

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

UrgentCare2Go

What is a Food Allergy?

A Food Allergy is an immune response triggered by specific foods, causing symptoms ranging from mild hives to severe anaphylaxis.

What symptoms suggest a possible Food Allergy?

Common symptoms include hives, swelling, stomach pain, nausea, throat tightness, breathing difficulty, or vomiting.

What foods commonly cause allergic reactions?

Common triggers include peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, fish, dairy, eggs, wheat, and soy. However, any food can potentially cause a reaction.

When should I seek urgent care for a Food Allergy?

Seek urgent care for severe swelling, difficulty breathing, throat tightness, dizziness, or rapidly worsening symptoms.

Can Food Allergy symptoms be evaluated through telehealth?

Telehealth can review symptoms and reaction history, but in-person evaluation may be recommended for physical assessment.

Do all reactions require allergy testing?

Not always. Providers determine testing needs based on severity, frequency, and pattern of reactions.

Is a Food Allergy the same as a food intolerance?

No. Intolerances involve digestion issues, while allergies involve the immune system and may be more serious.

Can providers prescribe medication for Food Allergies?

Yes. Providers can recommend or prescribe antihistamines, steroids, or epinephrine when medically appropriate.

Is this visit covered by insurance?

Most insurance plans cover Food Allergy evaluations. Coverage varies by plan and medical need.

Can children be evaluated for Food Allergies?

Yes. Children commonly experience Food Allergy symptoms and are fully eligible for evaluation and treatment.

How does an in-home visit help with anxiety about reactions?

In-home evaluations reduce exposure risk, eliminate travel, and allow patients to remain in a comfortable environment.

Can mild symptoms progress to severe reactions?

Yes. Allergic reactions can be unpredictable. Providers help determine your risk and create a safety plan.

Are Food Allergies lifelong?

Some are lifelong (like peanut or shellfish), while others—such as dairy or egg allergies—may be outgrown.

What treatment options are available?

Treatment may include symptom relief medications, avoidance strategies, emergency action plans, and referral for specialist testing.
