What Are Fibroadenomas?

Fibroadenomas are benign breast lumps composed of glandular and fibrous tissue. They are common in younger women and may vary in size. Though noncancerous, evaluating fibroadenomas is important to confirm diagnosis and monitor any changes over time.

  • Breast examination and assessment
  • Imaging recommendations such as ultrasound or mammogram
  • Monitoring or biopsy guidance if needed

Who is at risk?

They are most common in women under 30, but can occur at any age. Family history may slightly increase risk.

Do fibroadenomas increase cancer risk?

Generally, fibroadenomas are benign and do not increase cancer risk, but evaluation is important to rule out malignancy.

How are fibroadenomas detected?

Detection may be through self-examination, clinical breast exams, or imaging such as ultrasound or mammogram.

Is a biopsy necessary?

Biopsy is recommended if imaging or physical exam raises concerns or if the lump changes in size or texture.

Can fibroadenomas disappear on their own?

Some fibroadenomas may shrink over time, especially after menopause, but monitoring is essential.

Is the evaluation painful?

No, the evaluation involves non-invasive examination and imaging, with minimal discomfort.

Can men have fibroadenomas?

Fibroadenomas are extremely rare in men but can occur; evaluation should be conducted if a lump is detected.

Will insurance cover the evaluation?

Most insurance plans cover breast evaluations, imaging, and follow-up visits for fibroadenomas.

Should I monitor the lump at home?

Yes, regular self-exams are encouraged, and any changes should be promptly reported to your provider.
